Curriculum Design

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program offered at Xavier University is a 4 year program which is competency-based and community-oriented grounded in the most current scientific evidence.

As a competency-based curriculum, it is anchored on the principle that qualified students will be able to demonstrate the core competencies in the eleven (11) key areas of responsibilities evaluated by various indicators/behaviors.

As a community-oriented curriculum, teaching-learning activities will revolve around the promotion of health, prevention of illness, curative and rehabilitation of clients in the community, throughout the 4 year program.

There is a balance in the program’s theory and practice instruction according to professional requirements.

It demonstrates the use of sound pedagogical approaches to teaching and learning.

To maintain the standard of excellence, the college utilizes strategies that teach clinical reasoning, problem solving and critical thinking in the BSN program.


History

June 1989 signaled the beginning of Xavier University College of Nursing through the efforts of Rev. Fr. Ernesto Javier, SJ and Rev. Fr. Emeterio J. Barcelon, SJ.  It started with the leadership of two pioneering nursing administrators: Ellen P. Abear (Dean) and Ramona Heidi C. Palad (Asst. Dean).

It was given government recognition by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) in 1992 and graduated its first batch of nursing graduates in March 1993 with a 100% passing average in the Integrated Nurse Licensure Examination (NLE) given by the Professional Regulation Commission Board of Nursing on August 1993 in Davao City.

It has since gone through a decade of challenges and financial odds.  It was phase out in the year 2000 but was reopened in 2002.  It continuous to champion excellence and commitment of service among its graduates thus catapulting Xavier University into the top one (100%) performing school of nursing in the Philippines in the December 2006 Nurse Licensure Examination, top 2 (98%) performing school of nursing in the December 2007 Nurse Licensure Examination and again top 1 (99%) performing School of Nursing in the November 2008 Nurse Licensure Examination given by the Professional Regulation Commission – Board of Nursing.

It has produced more than a dozen of nursing graduates who were among the top 10 examinees in the Nursing Licensure examinations from 1993 to 2008.

Xavier University aims to continue the tradition of excellence and envisions itself to be the leading institution in the Philippines in providing quality nursing education to its students in order to give the best health service to their clientele globally.


Philosophy

The Xavier University College of Nursing believes that a person is a rational being, full of potentials and an active learner as she is created in the image and likeness of God.  He/She is imbued with virtues of faith, truth, justice and humility as exemplified by the life and teachings of Christ.  The College of Nursing exists to develop these potentials and enhance these innate qualities making the student of nursing an ideal nurse who presence provides hope and consolation to those afflicted with human sufferings.


Goal

The XUCN Program shall nurture the individual student’s social, spiritual, physical, psychological and intellectual endowments to prepare the student to become committed, compassionate, conscientious, caring professional nurse who shall demonstrate competence in the following areas of responsibilities: safe and quality care, health education, communication, collaboration and teamwork, ethico-moral and legal responsibility, personal and professional growth and development, management of resources and environment, quality improvement and research.

The College tradition of excellence and service is evident through its graduate’s exemplary performance in the nurse licensure examination and in the practice of the nursing profession in the Philippines and in other countries as well.

The BSN Program at Xavier University ensures that graduates are knowledgeable, safe practitioners of integrity.

The college prepares graduates with the following terminal competencies:

•    Evidence based practitioners and culturally competent across varied practice setting; ethical, critical and analytical thinkers;
•    Advocates and effective partners in health care delivery;
•    Leaders and lifelong learners with community service orientation.

Vision

Xavier University College of Nursing envisions itself to become the leading institution in the field of nursing education which shall provide the society with nurses who will provide an excellent health care, who shall be responsive to the needs and demands of local and global market.


Mission

The College is determined and committed to provide an excellent education that is Christian in orientation, holistic in approach, Filipino in character, global in perspective and geared towards the development of the total person.

To realize our vision the College of Nursing is committed to:

Provide quality education responsive to the needs and goals of the community and country;

Provide an environment conducive to academic, moral and spiritual growth of students, faculty and staff;

Cultivate the habit of critical thinking and scientific approach in the problem-solving and decision making;

Provide opportunities for involvement in community activities and service that will promote physical and spiritual fitness, cultural and environmental consciousness and a sense of national identity.


Amphitheater Use Policies and Guidelines


1.    The College on Nursing students and faculty and given first priority in the use of the Amphitheater.  Other colleges, schools, departments, units, organizations and institutions that want to use it for seminars, film showing, presentation, classroom instruction and discussion shall be charged rental fees.  Usage shall be confirmed on a first come first served basis.  Any user shall book at least two (2) days before his/her scheduled event and program through the College of Nursing Office.  Booking is considered confirmed upon approval by the Dean and the payment of appropriate charges.

College of Nursing Faculty/Student

1.    The Amphitheater will be used for orientation, seminar, workshop, forum, special functions, and classroom instruction
       (with a minimum of 3 blocks or 100 students and maximum of 5 blocks).
2.    Check the desired date on the Technical Staff booking record.
3.    Fill out the Amphitheater Booking Form at the Dean’s office.
4.    Submit the approved Booking Form to the Technical Staff.
5.    Follow it up a day after you submitted the form.


XU users / non XU users

1.    Check the desired date on the Technical Staff booking record.
2.    Make a letter of request addressed to the Dean.
3.    Fill out the Amphitheater Booking Form at the Dean’s office.
4.    Pay the appropriate charges at the Finance Office.
5.    Submit the approved Booking Form to the Technical Staff.
6.    Follow it up a day after you submitted the form.

2.    The use of other materials or equipment in the theater is subjects to clearance by the technical in-charge and the Dean.

3.    Users are responsible for maintaining cleanliness inside the Theater.

•    Leaving garbage, scratch paper, tissues, plastic waste on and under the table is strictly prohibited.
•    Eating candy/biscuits/any food, drinking soda water and chewing of bubble gum are not allowed. (with teacher’s discretion)
•    Writing on the desk and any other form of vandalism is punishable according to the University policy.
•    Using packaging tape and double sided tape is not allowed.
•    Doing painting Jobs and any flame (candle, lighter and match) inside the Amphitheater is not allowed.
•    Please always do the “after care” properly and efficiently.
•    The Faculty in charge and students will be held responsible for any damage and violation committed.
•    Please stay 1 foot away from the wall and the curtain to avoid wall stains and dirt.
4.    The use of cellular phones and other electronic gadgets (Ipod, mp3, disc man) during class hours is strictly prohibited.

5.    The user must be responsible for turning off all equipment (lights, sound system, air condition system, electric fan) if the user is done and the Technical Staff is not yet around or has already “timed out”.

6.    Users will be asked to replace or pay for any damaged equipment or facility in the Amphitheater.

7.    XU users shall pay Php 200 per hour for the use of the sound system, LCD equipment, air conditioning system and maintenance of the theater.  Furthermore, they shall be charged overtime fees of the Technical In-charged and the Assistants for usage beyond 5:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday, and usage on Saturday afternoon and Sunday.  Non-XU users shall pay a rental fee of Php 700 per hour and overtime fees for the Technical In-charge and the Assistant.  (note: all fees are based on Xavier University Rate).  Present the official receipt of payment of the use of Amphitheater to the Technician In-charge to confirm your reservation.
Note: for every reservation the management will add an hour for the final checking and closing the Amphitheater.

8.    Should there be cancellation of a prior booking; the users should inform the Technician In-charge and/or the College of Nursing Administration Staff at least 1 working day ahead.  Otherwise, booking fees will be forfeited.

9.    The Management will give priority to reservation of the office of the President.  Any reservation may be moved or cancelled.  Prior notice will be given and all payments refunded.
