The director of Xavier University – Governance and Leadership Institute (XU-GLI), Dr Dixon Q Yasay, gave the keynote speech at the Regional Data Dissemination Forum for the 2012 Census of Philippine Business and Industry (CPBI) on November 14 at the Grand Caprice Restaurant, Cagayan de Oro City.

The forum, organized by the National Statistics Office (NSO), aimed at disseminating the results of the 2012 CPBI to the industry players and policy makers. The result of the census is vital in establishing benchmark levels for measuring and comparing national, regional and provincial economic growth, and the construction of national and regional accounts of the Philippine economy.

The forum is also geared toward formulating and monitoring plans and policies in the attainment of national and regional economic goals; determining and comparing regional economic structures and performances; and to conduct market research and feasibility studies.

Dr Yasay’s speech centered on the utilization of data in the delivery of basic services which will eventually lead to the reduction of poverty in the region. He also highlighted the importance of informed policymaking where data can be used efficiently.

Dr Yasay pointed out that quality local legislation is a major strength of local governance where poverty alleviation can be achieved as the result of these key functions should government resources be used for the benefit of the people, especially the poor and the marginalized.
