With the phenomenal growth of the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and its prevalence in almost any application and area of work, the Generative AI in Education:  Current Practices and Potential for AI-Enriched Classrooms Symposium opened the 2023-2024 academic year for the Higher Education cluster of Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan.

Distinguished speakers, Dr Maria Mercedes Rodrigo, Project Leader of the Ateneo Laboratory for the Learning Sciences in ADMU and Dr Michelle Banawan, Academic Program Director of the Asian Institute of Management, showcased the various implementations of Gen AI and how AI-driven solutions are redefining the dynamics of teaching and learning.

The panel discussion, graced by Dr Meldie Apag, Dean of the College of Computer Studies, Adam Guanzon, CSG President and Atty Camilo Montesa, XU Trustee, engaged in discussions on the ethical considerations surrounding the integration of AI in education and highlighted the importance of striking a balance between human use and technological innovation.

The live demo session during the break showed participants how some AI tools can be utilized in teaching and learning.  In her call to action, Dr Juliet Q Dalagan, VP for Higher Education, encouraged the community to have a heightened understanding of AI and to ensure that technology shall serve as tool for an inclusive, dynamic and effective learning experiences as befits a Jesuit university.

The symposium is an initiative of the OVPHED - Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning as part of its program for continuing professional development for faculty.
