The lamp posts at the 12-hectare Basic Education Pueblo campus of Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan are now solar-powered which comes as an advantage as they are environment-friendly, inexpensive, and safe.  Similar lamp posts are also found in the Andrew L Gotianun Center for Integrated Technologies (ALGCIT), and Mercedes campuses. These new lamp posts provide more light to the areas along the fences of the XU campuses for the security and safety of the people and the property on these campuses.

The installation of the solar-powered street lamps as perimeter protective lighting on its Pueblo campus is in line with the university’s commitment in promoting and maintaining a safe, secure, and sustainable campus for the community. This action is very fitting as the first goal of Pope Francis’ Laudato Si Action Platform - Respond to the Cry of the Earth calls for us to protect our common home by adopting renewable energies and energy efficiency measures.

As of 9 October 2023, the project has been completed with a total of 141 units of solar street lamps installed on Pueblo Campus, CIT-Alvarez Campus, and Mercedes Campus. Trimming of trees, testing and commissioning, and turnover will follow thereafter.

XU President Fr Mars P Tan, SJ and the Administration team commit to installing more solar panels on the university campuses, while also recognizing the need to prepare the appropriate support structure and roofing of some existing buildings.  The use of more solar light to generate electricity for daily energy consumption promotes a clean and sustainable future for our common home.
