In a constantly changing world, we often find ourselves obliged to adjust to the advancements of modernity, smart technology, and innovations. The need to actively engage in these transformations arises as the world develops. For over nine decades, our home has resided in the heart of Cagayan de Oro City—the Main Campus. Throughout this period, we have forged customs, traditions, and distinctive cultures that serve as the bedrock of our unique identity deeply entrenched in the Jesuit faith steering us in our endeavors. We consistently strive to embrace our origins as a testament to our humble beginnings.

This year, we held the four-day Xavier University Festival Days which paid homage to our time-honored practices while fostering groundbreaking innovations, signifying our willingness to embrace change. With the central theme, "Padayon: Celebrating Traditions. Inspiring Innovations," the XUFD recalled XU’s beginnings and heritage as it celebrates its 90 years while also preparing for what lies beyond. Has XUFD withstand the test of time? Has it held on to traditions while being resilient to changes?

The commencement of the Festival Days included wreath-laying ceremonies and an opening mass presided by XU President, Fr Mars P Tan, SJ. Despite challenging weather conditions, the event was a resounding success. The enchanting lighting ceremony, reminiscent of falling stars, and the blessing of the Belen, serving as a poignant reminder of the humble birth of our savior, were complemented by a captivating walkthrough of the life of St Francis Xavier. All of this took place in the University Main Lane symbolizing the starting point of our journey as Ateneans and reinforcing our deep-rooted identity. Compared to the previous year's hybrid Festival Days, this year's festivities unfolded in all their glory, without limitations. Attendees revel in an abundance of delectable liking, including the ever-popular duck and fan hairpins, while also indulging in the aromatic allure of affordable coffee and experiencing once again the Korean culture through food, completing the entire Xavier Ateneo Festival Days experience.

The Bike Caravan and Move for More symbolized XU’s intent to move forward while introducing fresh activities that ignited innovative practices, ultimately establishing a novel tradition for the future. Some activities served as platforms for our talents and creativity, such as Swifties Night, classical performances, and the highly anticipated return of XU Goes KPOP. By embracing change, we fostered not only individual creativity and self-expression, as exemplified in the lively Kazocon Cosplay Convention and the art of embodying beloved characters, but also warmly welcomed our alums to the festival. The festival allowed them to reconnect with their cherished memories, honor the traditions they were once part of, and rediscover the invaluable lessons they learned as students.

XUFD has indeed established itself, not only as part of XU’s tradition but of Cagayan de Oro City’s with an enormous number of attendees at 130,554, the biggest in the past seven years. Majority of those who enjoyed the festival said they wanted to witness XUFD 2023 because of tradition, community and alumni connection, and attractions and activities. It’s 4.26 overall rating, from last year’s 3.82, is a testament that the festival was able to withstand the test of time. “Amazing, memorable, and enjoyable,” “relevant and entertaining,” “truly exhibited the Ateneo [way].” This was XUFD 2023.

Clearly, XU has forged itself to become excellent in its pursuits, grounded with traditions that protected its Atenean identity, Ignatian values and principles, and strengthening the university as it fulfills its vision to become globally competitive.  From 1933 to the present, XU continues to be inspired by innovative practices in adapting to the needs of the time as it moves toward the future.

Padayon. We persevere through hardships and uphold our principles in the face of challenges, embarking on innovative endeavors while cherishing the wisdom of the past. As the centennial celebration of Xavier Ateneo approaches, may the benevolent spirit and the essence of ‘Padayon’ prevail!
