US Embassy Manila's cultural affairs officer Matt Keener visited the consulate's fishery project site in Loguilo in the Municipality of Alubijid, Misamis Oriental.

The project targets to develop sustainable and productive fisheries in the said municipality and build protective and sanctuary campaign program against overfishing in Misamis Oriental. It is a three-year undertaking by US Embassy Manila and the American Corner of Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan, in partnership with the International Studies 85 (American Political Thought) class of the Department of History, International Studies, and Political Science of the XU College of Arts and Sciences and the Social Development Office.

The campaign aims to organize the fishermen, profile the fishing community, and capacitate the officers and members in protecting their marine resources. Its major aim is to improve the quality of life of the fishing community anchored on protecting the environment, particularly the coastal resources to ensure the enjoyment of the present and future generations.

The said project is divided into five major parts, namely, (1) socio-economic profiling of the community village, (2) community organizing where the community members, particularly the fishermen and their wives will be organized, (3) capacity-building and empowerment, (4) formulation of a five-year development plan, and (5) information and education campaign on coastal resource management, particularly the effects of overfishing.

Keener also led the turn over of a 3D printer and smart board to the XU Learning Spaces as part of the DIY MarkerSpace feature of the XU library.∎
