CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines — The College of Law of Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan ranked ninth among top-performing law schools in the country, based on the results of the November 2018 Bar Exams.

Xavier Ateneo Law garnered a passing rate of 54.9% after 28 out of 51 takers successfully passed the Bar. Twenty-seven of the passers are XU Law graduates and one is from Ateneo de Zamboanga Law, which had six examinees last year. AdZU Law is accredited by the Legal Education Board as "XU Law in Zamboanga," hence, the performance of AdZU was officially recorded under Xavier University.

From the XU passers, 21 were first-time takers (21 out of 26 or 80.76%) and six were re-takers (6 out of 19 or 31.57%).

In his memo to the academic community, university president Fr Roberto “Bobby” C Yap SJ wrote, “We thank Dean Silvia Jo G Sabio, the faculty, and staff of the XU College of Law for the guidance and support they give to our students.”

Yap added: “May the College of Law continue to form lawyers whose service promote a deep respect for the dignity of the human person and the common good.”

In a text message sent on Friday, June 21, Dean Sabio also expressed her congratulations and gratitude to the people behind this latest feat of the XU College of Law.

She wrote: “Dear members of the faculty of the College of Law: We ranked 9th in the highest passing rates for the 2018 Bar Exams. Congratulations! Thank you for all your efforts and may we continue to strive to be better.”

Xavier Ateneo is the only university from Region 10 (Northern Mindanao) to be included in the said ranking released by the Supreme Court earlier this month.

Along with Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan, two other Ateneo law schools made it to the list: Ateneo de Manila University (#1 with 86.76%) and Ateneo de Davao University (#5 with 64.52%).

The 1,800 new lawyers who comprised the 22.07% nationwide passing rate for 2018 took their oath on June 13 at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City.∎
