The Biology Department’s faculty members and graduate students joined the 27th Philippine Society for Microbiology, Inc - Mindanao (PSM - Mindanao) Annual Convention and Scientific Meeting with the theme, “PSM-Mindanao, ENGAGE: Enhancing Networks in Government, Academe, General Industries and Environment Sector for Unity and Prosperity for Mindanaoans” last December 1 to 2, 2022 at Venue 88, Mabuhay Rd., General Santos City, South Cotabato, Philippines.
Dr. Astrid Sinco, Dr. Lynde Bullong, Mr. Paolo Antonio Fudalan, Mr. Carl Ian John Hallazgo, and Mr. Proceso Perturbos III were the Xavier Ateneo participants of the two-day onsite conference attended by over 300 faculty, students, government workers, and representatives of various companies and industries.
The event was opened with the remarks from Dr. Lynn Esther Rallos of Mindanao State University - General Santos City; an inspirational message from PSM National President Dr. Howell Ho; and a keynote address from the Department of science and Technology (DOST) XII Regional Director Engr. Sammy Malawan. The conference was also filled with different talks and research presentations coming from the experts of the various fields of microbiology. An oral and poster research competition was also held among student participants to showcase their research works.
Dr. Sinco, the current Aquatic Microbiology Division Representative and the chairperson of the Biology Department, was nominated and elected as the Vice-President of the Chapter for the 2023-2024 term. She will automatically become the president on the succeeding fiscal year. She already served as the 20th president of the Chapter during the 2014-2015 fiscal year. Meanwhile, Mr. Fudalan retained his current position being the treasurer of the Chapter.
The Philippine Society for Microbiology, Inc. aims to promote scientific knowledge in the field of microbiology and other related fields. It has four regional chapters including Mindanao.
