Dr. Joselito P. Quirino holds a Ph. D. in Material Science (Analytical Chemistry) from the Himeji Institute of Technology, Hyogo, Japan. Currently, he is an Associate Professor at the Australian Center for Research on Separation Science at Tasmania University, Australia.

During his short-term Balik Scientist visit in 2009, with Ateneo de Manila University as host institution, Dr. Quirino served as co-adviser to two faculty members who were Ph.D. students, one of whom is a faculty member of XU Chemistry Department, Ms. Heide R Rabanes, and assisted them in their thesis research.

He wrote a collaborative research proposal with Ateneo de Manila University, titled "Determination of Pesticides Used in the Philippines by Capillary Electrophoresis and Micro-Liquid Chromatography with ultraviolet and mass spectrometry detection, which was submitted to DOST for funding. He conducted lectures in the area of Capillary Electrophoresis, sponsored by the Department of Chemistry - Ateneo de Manila University, Organic Chemistry Teachers Association (OCTA), Kapisanang Kimika ng Pilipinas (KKP) and the Philippine Institute of Pure and Applied chemistry (PIPAC).

Assoc Prof Quirino joined ACROSS (Australian Centre for Research on Separation Science) in December 2007, following work in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry in the United States from 2001 to 2007. He did PhD and postdoc with Shigeru Terabe, and another postdoc with Richard Zare at Stanford University (California, USA). He was instructor of pharmaceutical chemistry at the University of the Philippines from 1992 to 1996.

In this lecture, a green chemistry sample preparation scheme called solventless electrokinetic micropurification will be presented. The second part of the talk will revolve around the world of several international PhD students (including 4 Filipinos) that experienced research at the University of Tasmania.
