The Xavier University community offered its afternoon Mass on Sept 11 for peace in Zamboanga, Syria and other places experiencing conflict. Fr Tony Moreno, who served as President of Ateneo de Zamboanga for six years before becoming Father Provincial of the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus, gave the homily.

“We pray for peace in Zamboanga, Syria and places where there is violence,” he said. “We also do our bit to help. A small help can be a profound gesture of solidarity.”

The Mass was followed by an interfaith prayer, which included a sharing of sentiments by a few Christian and Muslim students. They underscored the teaching of peace across all regions. The prayer concluded with the lighting of candles symbolizing the longing and deep desire for peace, and the recitation of the Prayer for Peace.

Everyone is enjoined to say the Prayer for Peace.

Prayer for Peace

O God, we come to you in our need. Create in us an awareness of the massive forces of conflict that threaten our world today. And grant us a sense of urgency to activate the forces of goodness, of justice, of love and of peace.

Where there is armed conflict, let there be dignified living and constant striving for just structures. Where there is selfish ambition, let there be humble service. Where there is injustice, let there be atonement. Where there is despair, let there be hope in the Good News. Where there are wounds of division, let there be unity and wholeness.

Help us to be committed to the building of Your kingdom, not seeking to be cared for but to care; not expecting to be served but to place ourselves in the service of others; not aspiring to be materially secure but to place our security in Your love. Teach us Your spirit, for it is only in loving imitation of You, O God, that we can discover the healing spring of life that will bring about new birth to our Earth and hope for the world. Amen.

Lig-una ang among kaakuhan sa pagtukod sa Imong Gingharian, Ginoo, nga dili kami magtinguha nga ma-alagaran, apan sa pagtinguha sa pagbutang sa among kaugalingon sa pag-alagad sa uban; nga dili kami maghandum sa kaseguruhan sa mga butang materyal, apan sa pagtinguha sa pagbutang sa among kaseguruhan  diha sa Imong gugma. Tudlo-i kami sa Imong espiritu, Ginoo, kay diha lamang sa mahigugmaong pagsundog kanimo, nga ma-diskubrihan namo ang mga maka-alim nga tuburan sa kinabuhi, nga maoy magbag-o ug maghatag ug paglaum sa among kalibutan.
