The Governance and Leadership Institute (GLI) of Xavier University, along with Zuellig Family Foundation (ZFF) and Department of Health (DOH), conducted a training on the 2nd module of the Municipal Leadership and Governance Program (MLGP) on September 8-11 at Mallberry Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City.

MLGP is a one-year, two-module program for selected local chief executives and municipal health officers from municipalities identified by the DOH. The identified municipalities are Balingoan, Binuangan, Lagonglong, Lugait, Magsaysay, Medina, Naawan, and Opol.

Under the Health Leadership and Governance Program (HLGP) of the DOH and ZFF, GLI has been trained and certified as an Academic Partner. The title entails conducting a training consultancy for the DOH – Center for Health Development for Northern Mindanao.

The newly appointed DOH regional director for Region X, Dr Nimfa Torrizo, graced the event, advising the participants to not limit what they have learned during the training and to continue with their respective health programs even after the 2016 elections.

“Hopefully this would not end here because we will be answering the real issues. There are a lot of diseases that the LGUs cannot solve with the resources and knowledge and the manpower they have,” Dr Torrizo said.

“We are working in the framework of universal health. We must work with commitment, competence, passion, and creativeness,” she added.

GLI director Dr Dixon Yasay stated the importance of the Bridging Leadership Framework that MLGP employs. He stressed that the leaders should own the health problems of the community and that the collaboration among the government, private sector, civil society, and the church is crucial.

By honing the LGUs’ capability as efficient and effective health advocates who are responsive to health challenges and issues in their respective municipalities, GLI commits to the development of local governance in Mindanao.
