With the tagline “Let’s start a new habit! Let’s do Magis Habit,” Xavier University recently unveiled the Magis Habit campaign, which aims to promote cleanliness and orderliness among diners in the Magis Canteen.

The launching on September 30 at the Magis Complex featured speakers who discussed the significance of practicing the 3S: “Speak Softly, Share A Table, and SAYGO (Segregate As You Go)” and how these could develop into "personal and political commitment" towards making the canteen more conducive for the members of the XU community and guests.

The Magis Habit encourages all users of the Magis Canteen to minimize noise, consider others’ needs for space, and properly observe cleanliness and waste segregation.

In a statement, XU Office of the Student Affairs (OSA) director Ivanell Subrabas said, “Magis Habit is a proactive means of finding solution to the cleanliness concern at the Magis Canteen. It calls for attitudinal change where a sense of moral responsibility on care for the environment is keenly manifested in our day-to-day action.”

Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts (XCCA) director Hobart Savior said that achieving good quality of life begins with reflecting on our own personal values and lifestyle, which includes understanding broadly how we take care of our environment.

“Having a good quality of life must be displayed and shared with others even in simple ways such as observing the 3S at the Magis Canteen in order for us to achieve wellbeing within our common home, our own community,” said Savior.

The Magis Habit will run for five months, from October 2015 to February 2016. It has four major components for sustainability:

a. Policy and guideline documents to support other initiatives related to the program;
b. Instructional and educational media materials which will be used to promote the advocacy and heighten awareness of the members of the community;
c. Fixture which includes racks with improved design for storing leftover and used utensils; and
d. Series of activities which will concretize the message of the program.

Besides OSA and XCCA, behind the the said campaign are the Atenista Ako Movement, Central Student Government, various student organizations, XU National Service Training Program, School of Education through its Peace Education Advocacy, First Year Formation Program, Campus Development Office, Green Campus Agenda and the XU Community Multi-Purpose Cooperative.
