Xavier University’s Ateneo Diplomatic Corps (ADC) and STREAMS Pathways to Higher Education received official recognition as Unesco accredited student clubs in the Philippines during the International Assembly of Youth for Unesco (Y4U) held recently at the University of Santo Tomas.

The three-day event, in line with the celebration of the International Day of Peace, drew together more than 300 delegates from 71 student organizations across the country and abroad. XU ADC and STREAMS were accredited along with 28 other student organizations.

The Ateneo Diplomatic Corps is the co-curricular organization of the International Studies program of XU under the History/ International Studies/ Political Science Department, while the Supplementary Training to Reinforce Education of the Academically-gifted and Marginalized Students – XU Pathways to Higher Education (STREAMS-XU Pathways to Higher Education) helps public high school students in Misamis Oriental and Cagayan de Oro City increase their chances of admission to college by tutoring them and helping them get scholarships.

ADC and STREAMS are not only the first organizations in XU to be accredited as Unesco clubs but also the first in Cagayan de Oro City. As members of the National Assembly of Unesco Clubs in the Philippines, they are expected to integrate peace-building into their activities and programs.

STREAMS secretary-general Allyssa Monece Damit with moderator and concurrent program coordinator of XU Student Activities and Leadership Development (SACDEV) Jessa Mae Dugenio, and ADC chargé d'affaires Devin Cabatingan and executive secretary Rey Angelie Inso received the certificates of accreditation on behalf of their organizations.

The Y4U also served as an avenue for XU International Studies students to connect with fellow IS organizations from two Ateneo schools, namely Ateneo de Manila University’s Baybayin and Ateneo de Davao University’s Ateneo International Studies Students Organization (AISSO).

The Y4U 2015 centered on the theme "Gearing up for ASEAN Integration towards Sustainable Development." It discussed topics on climate change, human rights and post-2015 education agenda with speakers who are considered experts in their fields.
