Nearly a month since the Xavier Senior High School classes started, university administrators met with the parents of the inaugural batch of XUSHS students to elaborate how the voucher program of the Department of Education works.

Three batches of parents and senior high school students attended the orientation on June 25 at the XU Little Theater.

XU’s vice-president for basic education Dr Dulce Dawang explained that the Senior High School Voucher Program (SHSVP) is intended for Grade 10 (Junior High School) completers who wish to pursue Senior High School (SHS) education in non-DepEd Schools such as private high schools, colleges, and universities; local universities and colleges (LUC); state universities and colleges (SUCs); and technical and vocational schools, starting school year 2016-2017.

The voucher enables SHS students to claim a “discount” or a deduction from the cost of tuition and other fees charged by non-DepEd senior high schools, such as Xavier University. The voucher is not given to students directly in the form of cash but will be disbursed by DepEd to the school.

DepEd's SHSVP hopes to provide families a greater choice in deciding the Senior High School program that is most relevant to their children’s needs and career goals.

Besides Dr Dawang, XUSHS principal Dr Roger Gawahan, XUSHS assistant principal for administration Dr Libby Abesamis, and university treasurer Engr Lennie Ong answered various questions from the audience.

It was not the first time XU conducted an orientation on the said subsidy program of the government. However, this particular orientation has reminded how parents, students and the school can work together toward making the SHS voucher program sustainable and efficient as our country traverses a major educational shift.
