A group of psychologists, psychometricians, and social workers from the treatment and rehabilitation division of the Department of Health - Cagayan de Oro and XU Psychology Department teamed up to conduct a three-day facilitators’ training on “Katatagan Kontra Droga sa Komunidad,” a community-based relapse prevention program.

The said activity was able to train community facilitators in handling 12 individual modules and three family and community modules that teach drug surrenderees the necessary coping skills and support to prevent relapse on illegal drug use.

This program came about with the intention of the Psychological Association of the Philippines (PAP) to create an intervention program that is research and evidence-based to address the urgent need to relieve the growing number of drug-surrenderees in the community.

PAP president Dr Margaret Helen Udarbe-Alvarez RPsy shared that one of the goals of PAP is social transformation. She called upon all Filipino psychologists to engage themselves in “societal restructuring, proactive understanding, providing a scientific analysis of whatever happens in society, taking positions and actions on important issues, and supporting the psychological needs of individuals and/or organizations that are in the vortex of social transformation.”

DOH-TRC psychologist Nerissa Buot RPsy MA together with XU Psychology Department chairman Jason Manaois RPm MA led the team of trained facilitators, namely, Maita Ignacio RPm MA, Virgie Requilaman RPsy, James Patrick Divinagracia RPm, Xela Mae Urbiztondo RPm, Kathlynn Gertude de la Torre RPm, Jovylyn Smith RSW, Karren Carrera RPm, Mark Anthony Miñoza, and Cecilla Anne del Socorro RSW.

Forty participants from the municipality of Manolo Fortich under the LGU - Manolo Fortich Ministerial Association were trained on April 26 to 28 at Mangima Heroes Hall, Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon. The said activity was supported by Mayor Clive D Quiño, a graduate of MA Public Administration of XU’s Graduate School.

The facilitators who completed the training will be mobilized to handle low to mild risk drug surrenderees of the identified communities assessed by their local health unit. ∎
