The STREAMS XU - Pathways to Higher Education marks its STREAMS Batch 13 Academy opening on Saturday, August 12 at the New American Spaces Philippines of Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan.

Forty-four accepted Junior Rowers of STREAMS Batch 13 met for the first time and listened to the inspirational talks of director of student affairs Ivanell Subrabas, Dr Chatty Absin from the XU  School of Education, the success story of STREAMS Batch 12 valedictorian Lea Gerodiaz, and on the American Spaces Philippines and Opportunities from XU director of libraries Estrella Cabudoy.

The STREAMS (Supplementary Training to Reinforce Education to the Academically-gifted and Marginalized Students) is one of the educational development programs of Xavier Ateneo under the Office of the Student Affairs - Student Activities and Development (OSA-SACDEV).

This program aims to help public Grade 10 and Grade 11 students enhance their knowledge on the academic subjects for higher chances of passing senior high school entrance examinations and to acquire scholarship grants. In turn, this also serves as an avenue for XU volunteers to live out the Atenean value of “men and women for others.”

Since 2004, STREAMS has been giving opportunities to poor but deserving students all over Cagayan de Oro City, El Salvador, Misamis Oriental, and Bukidnon, after a thorough screening of all the student applicants.

Every Saturday from 7:30AM to 4PM, STREAMS Academy’s bright and skilled volunteer tutors teach the participants on the sciences, business management, mathematics, and languages.

Besides the academic sessions, the self-enhancement sessions help the participants improve their self-concept and self-esteem through activities and workshops.

In order to fulfill the main goal of STREAMS, which is to sustain the higher education of the participants through the scholarships, the volunteers also assist them in applying for grants from sponsors and different sectors inside and outside of XU.

For the record, STREAMS had provided assistance to over 500 students, even reaching out the most isolated public schools in Northern Mindanao.

STREAMS helps make higher education dreams come true for the marginalized and academically gifted students, and shapes Ateneans into better persons for others, as best captured in their tagline, "STREAMS  - Sailing Beyond Boundaries."

Their challenge continues: “Let's make education more accessible to our generation! Keep rowing!”∎
