Dr William G PadolinaCommencement Speaker 2025 |
As we celebrate the 86th commencement exercises of Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan, let me first congratulate Class 2025. I know you have worked so hard to prepare you for a future that you will need to face bravely and resolutely. I have no doubt that Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan has prepared you to cope with the future, to enhance your God-given talents, as you assume various roles in the national and global workforce. The Greek philosopher, Aristotle, tell us that the “roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet.”As we celebrate the 86th commencement exercises of Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan, let me first congratulate Class 2025. I know you have worked so hard to prepare you for a future that you will need to face bravely and resolutely. I have no doubt that Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan has prepared you to cope with the future, to enhance your God-given talents, as you assume various roles in the national and global workforce. The Greek philosopher, Aristotle, tell us that the “roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet.” Let me thank Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan for this distinct honor to confer upon me the degree of Doctor of Education, honoris causa, which I accept in all humility. I thank God for this unexpected blessing conferred upon someone who is a member of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines. May I join everyone in thanking the parents, teachers, school administrators, the Board of Trustees for their commitment and dedication to convey the skills, values, and attitudes that will enable all graduates of this institution to be responsible citizens by faithful adherence to academic excellence, holistic formation, social engagement, and global competitiveness. My first visit to your campus was in the mid-70s as part of a group of scientists gathered by the Philippine Coconut Research and Development Foundation to assess in the field the status of the Philippine coconut industry. We had interesting discussions with Fr. Masterson in his office at SEARSOLIN. Although that was my first and only opportunity to meet Fr. Masterson, I have been fortunate to visit your campus a few more times to discuss your activities related to your science and technology programs especially as they relate to agriculture and rural development. Please allow me to share with you a few highlights of the journey to where I am now and accord grateful recognition to those who made me what I have been most fortunate to become. Let me recognize the love and care of family: my father, mother and younger brother all of whom have been called to the Great Beyond. Grateful for the guidance of my teachers from early childhood to graduate school. To my loving wife, Tina, and the three children God has blessed us, Isagani and his spouse Anneke, Ibarra, and Linglingay and her husband Mario, their families, including six fast-growing grandchildren, Liam, Izzy, Maya, Willow, Cole, and Lyla. They have all touched my life in ways words will not be able to express. ***Access the full speech here*** |
