In line with Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan’s commitment to environmental stewardship, the United Arts and Sciences Student Council (UNITASS) spearheaded “Weed and Lead: The Green Hands Project”, the university’s first-ever weeding initiative. Held on 1 February 2025, at New Manresa Farm, El Gaucho Field Laboratory in Puerto, Cagayan de Oro City, the project was a collaborative effort with the XU Atiman Kinaiyahan Committee and the XU Social Involvement and Advocacy Program (SIAP). Designed to support the growth of young trees and crops, the initiative focused on removing invasive plants that compete for essential nutrients. As part of its educational component, the volunteers also produced a tutorial video on proper weeding techniques, aiming to raise awareness and inspire meaningful action within and beyond the university community.
Volunteers braved the steep slope and morning heat to remove invasive plants and
check the growth of the bamboo trees planted last semester.
The initiative gathered 26 students from various College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) home organizations and 15 faculty members from different CAS departments, all united by a shared commitment to environmental conservation. Their collective efforts were further strengthened by the presence of key university figures, including Dr Judy P Sendaydiego, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; Engr Lennie K Ong and Dr Ann Charlette A Cabana, from the Campus of the Future Development Office; and Mr Nestor M Banuag Jr from the XU Social Involvement and Advocacy Program (SIAP). Their participation not only boosted morale but also demonstrated that environmental responsibility transcends rank and hierarchy, reinforcing the unity of individuals working toward a common cause.
After successfully clearing the area of invasive plants, the volunteers gathered to share their reflections on the experience. This moment fostered a deeper sense of camaraderie, as students and faculty alike connected over their shared efforts in protecting the environment. Jan Cody Maraguinot, UNITASS Environmental Education Committee (EEC) Chairperson and project head, expressed how fulfilling the initiative was despite the challenges, saying, “Although the process was tiring, with many factors that need consideration, it was still very fulfilling to be able to contribute towards the environment knowing that the simple actions we do now, has the potential to create huge impacts in the future.” UNITASS President Gabriella Alaba also reflected on the project’s potential for growth, adding, “Hopefully, next time we will be able to invite other students, because it really is an experience for everyone as they get to appreciate the process.”

The success of Weed and Lead: The Green Hands Project marks a milestone for Xavier University’s environmental initiatives, advancing sustainability efforts while fostering a greater sense of ecological responsibility among students and faculty. More than just an environmental activity, the project serves as an open invitation for more students, organizations, and partners to take part in shaping a greener, more sustainable future—one step at a time.
