Xavier University - National Service Training Program (XU-NSTP) joins this academic year's tree-growing activity as one of the stakeholders of the university’s Atiman Kinaiyahan Tree Growing Program. Following the first planting at El Gaucho, Upper Puerto, Cagayan de Oro City on 31 August 2024, the volunteers proceeded to Brgy Lupiagan, Sumilao, Bukidnon to plant 750 giant bamboo seedlings on 21 September 2024.
The activity unfolded with an enthusiastic yet solemn opening ceremony, greeting the morning breeze with the involvement of NSTP students and student volunteers, faculty, formators, and university administrators. In her opening remarks, Engr Lennie K Ong, Project Director of the Campus of the Future Development Office, acknowledged the collective effort of the different sectors of the university and the valuable support of its partners; Del Monte Philippines Inc, Cebu Landmasters Inc, the Philippine Air Force, the indigenous community of Brgy Lupiagan, and the local government unit of Sumilao. She also emphasized how this annual NSTP initiative became an avenue for the Atiman Kinaiyahan Tree Growing Program to outnumber its previous achievement of planting 310 tree seedlings at El Gaucho.
A welcome message full of enthusiasm was also delivered by XU President Fr Mars P Tan, SJ who graced the activity with his presence and support. He passionately reminded the NSTP students about the importance of their participation in promoting environmental sustainability. He highlighted that their efforts not only benefit the local communities but also reflect the university’s commitment to shaping students into responsible individuals who care for others and the environment. The university president emphasized that the students' hard work serves the common good of both their generation and future ones.
NSTP students from the College of Agriculture, College of Arts and Sciences, and College of Engineering were among those who planted seedlings. XU-NSTP Director Ms Norinyl E Jumalon encouraged the students to understand the importance of taking an active role in environmental preservation. She emphasized that the course challenges students to go beyond academic requirements and take action to protect the environment.
This important milestone marks the beginning of a legacy that will be nurtured by today’s pioneers and passed on to future generations.
