At the heart of Xavier Ateneo’s governance is a deeply rooted commitment to integrity, inclusivity, and accountability. Guided by Jesuit principles of discernment and service, the University’s governance structure ensures that leadership decisions are not only strategic but also anchored in the collective mission to form men and women for others.
Central to this governance framework is the Board of Trustees, the highest policy-making body of the University. Composed of fifteen (15) distinguished members, the Board reflects a balanced representation of leadership across academia, business, and social sectors. In keeping with Xavier Ateneo’s Jesuit identity, at least eight (8) trustees are chosen from among the Jesuit members of the Corporation, ensuring that decisions remain aligned with the institution’s Catholic and Jesuit mission.
Trustees are elected through a transparent and participatory process. Elections take place by ballot during the annual meeting of the Corporation or at a special meeting convened for this purpose. Each member may cast as many votes as there are positions to be filled, but only one vote per candidate. Those receiving the highest number of votes are declared elected.
Vacancies on the Board are addressed promptly to maintain continuity in leadership. These are filled by election at a regular meeting of the Board, with the elected trustee serving only for the unexpired term.
The University President is elected from among the members of the Board of Trustees. Should the President cease to be a member of the Board, they automatically relinquish the position. This provision underscores the principle that leadership at Xavier Ateneo is deeply integrated with governance, ensuring accountability and fidelity to the institution’s mission.
Over the years, amendments to the University’s charter have demonstrated Xavier Ateneo’s responsiveness to evolving educational and societal contexts. These changes strengthen its commitment to ethical leadership and good governance, ensuring that policies and decisions remain relevant and principled.
In alignment with its mission as a Filipino, Catholic, and Jesuit institution, Xavier Ateneo’s governance model emphasizes discerned decision-making rooted in truth, transparency, and accountability. This approach guarantees that governance is not merely administrative but a profound expression of Xavier Ateneo’s identity and purpose.

The governance structure of the university supports the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
