Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan integrates the assessment of sustainability literacy across academic, formation, and co-curricular programs in line with its mission to form persons-for-and-with-others and its commitment to the Laudato Si’ Goals and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- Course-Integrated Assessments
Sustainability concepts are embedded in general education, professional, and graduate programs. Undergraduate and graduate courses on environmental science, engineering, ecology, sustainability, ethics and other related topics require students to demonstrate understanding through reflection essays, case analyses, and applied projects on ecological stewardship and social justice.
- Ignatian Formation and Service-Learning Programs
Through the service-learning program of the Social Development cluster and student formation centered programs of the Mission and Ministry cluster, students engage in community immersion and environmental action programs. Post-engagement reflection papers and evaluation tools measure the growth of students’ ecological and social awareness.
- Institutional Surveys and Evaluations
The University periodically conducts surveys and outcome evaluations to assess students’ attitudes, awareness, and behaviors related to sustainability and integral ecology. These include feedback tools used in course evaluations, graduate exit surveys, and alumni tracer studies.
- External Validation and Reporting
Declaration as a Laudato Si university, participation in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings and UI GreenMetric requires documentation of sustainability- related learning outcomes and institutional performance. Data from these assessments serve as indirect but formal measures of sustainability literacy within the university community.
- Research and Capstone Outputs
Student dissertation, theses and capstone projects in programs such as in the arts and sciences, engineering, computer studies, nursing, medicine, agriculture, education, business, management and public administration studies are reviewed where applicable, for SDG relevance, reflecting students’ application of sustainability principles in their disciplines.
