Rationale

As globalization and mobility bring the world closer, there is a need for global citizens to be competent in other languages.  Learning a foreign language increases global understanding, sharpen cognitive and life skills and allows us to understand and appreciate different cultures.

Spanish is the primary language of more than 20 countries worldwide.   It is estimated that the combined number of Spanish speakers is between 470 to 500 million.  It is also the second most natively spoken language in the world and in international communication.  It is now increasingly the second language that US citizens are choosing.

Mindanao universities are also internationalizing their curriculum with the inclusion of foreign languages in programs such as International Studies, History, Hospitality, Business, and ICT.  Spanish, in particular is not just an elective course but a requisite for the History program.  Language training, therefore, is an imperative not just in the national capital but also in the provinces, particularly for Mindanao.

Objectives

The Taller de Formación is primarily designed to help teachers or future teachers of Spanish attain a level of linguistic competence which allows for effective teaching and communication in any situation in the basic level and, when possible, to breakthrough level (A1-B1).  The training is also helpful for History teachers and students in order to enhance awareness and understanding of our Hispanic heritage.
