As a Jesuit, Catholic, and Filipino university, Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan participates in the universal mission of the Society of Jesus or Jesuits — the service of faith and the promotion of justice.
In 2019, Fr. Arturo Sosa, S.J., Superior General of the Society of Jesus, announced the Universal Apostolic Preferences (UAPs): four global priorities that guide all Jesuit works for the next decade (2019-2029). These preferences orient our discernment, apostolic planning, and institutional action, inspiring the Xavier Ateneo community to live out our mission of forming persons-for-and-with-others in today’s world.
The Universal Apostolic Preferences are not projects or isolated goals. They are spiritual orientations — ways of proceeding that help the Society of Jesus and its institutions respond to the world’s needs through prayer, reflection, and action. These four preferences call us to deepen our relationship with God, walk with the excluded, care for our common home, and accompany the youth in creating a hope-filled future.

The Universal Apostolic Preferences guide all areas of university life — from academic formation and research to leadership and community engagement. Through continuing discernment and collaboration, Xavier Ateneo seeks to be a university where faith and justice meet, and where every member of the community participates in the mission of reconciliation with God, with others, and with creation.
