“Good leadership in higher education manifests the following qualities: clarity of goals, ability to communicate these goals to the community, ability to innovate, and lead by example,” began the profile of Dr Jovelyn Delosa in the roster of this year’s fellows of the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia.

Delosa, dean of Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan’s School of Education, was recently named as one of 14 accomplished leaders in higher education for the United Board’s 2018-2019 cohort, representing a wide range of academic disciplines and administrative experiences across nine Asian countries and regions. She is one of four Filipinos in the program.

For Delosa, a good leader is “humble and persevering.”

“Managing is difficult but leading is harder,” she said. “As a leader, one does not only bring her ideas to the organization but her values, her life. Good leaders move and inspire others to succeed together.”

The XU dean is actively involved in teacher education and was appointed a member of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) National Technical Working Group on Teacher Training and Instruction Programs. She is also a member of CHED Northern Mindanao’s Regional Quality Assessment Team for Teacher Education and chairs various committees in the university.

Delosa earned her doctorate in education from Xavier University, has a masters of arts in education from the University of Adelaide in Australia, and another master of arts in education from Xavier University’s School of Management. She was a global fellow at California State University in 2016.

United Board fellowship

Now on its 16th year, the fellowship sets to “work with colleges and universities to enhance Christian presence through whole-person education in higher education in Asia.” It is designed to answer the needs of leadership development for mid-career faculty and administrators from Asian colleges and universities.

The United Board Fellows Program will again collaborate with the Harvard Institutes for Higher Education (HIHE) at the Harvard Graduate School of Education for its Summer Institute in 2018, following the highly successful undertaking held for the 2017-2018 class of fellows.

According to the official announcement of the United Board, the three-week program has earned high praise from fellows for its emphasis on leadership development and building effective teams; international trends in higher education; and practical matters such as financial management, strategic planning, and performance assessment.

This year’s program will also feature segments on digital trends and tools impacting higher education, as well as on ethical leadership, women in higher education leadership, and university research frameworks.

Jovy’s joys

Xavier Ateneo president Fr Roberto C Yap SJ, in his memo to the academic community, congratulated Dr Jovy for being one of the United Board fellows this year.

Yap wrote: “Xavier Ateneo has been blessed. Dean Jovy is the third Xavier Ateneo dean who has been chosen consecutively as a United Board fellow. Dean Juliet Dalagan (College of Arts & Sciences) was a fellow in 2016-2017. Dean Herks Cascon (College of Engineering) is completing his fellowship for 2017-2018. Our prayers go with Dean Jovy and we look forward to the innovations she will bring to Xavier Ateneo.”

Through the United Board Fellows Program, Jovy believes she will gain experiences that will enable her to continue contributing to quality teacher education in the Philippines.

She loves to study new measurement frameworks and do online courses about Rasch measurement, and she also finds great joy in stargazing.∎
