The Service Learning Summit is an annual event of Xavier Ateneo’s Service Learning Program (SLP). This year’s theme on “Engaging Xavier Ateneo to the frontiers of building resilient communities” focused on resilience as a priority area in pushing for sustainability and inclusivity in development.

Resilience is the capacity of individuals, communities, and sectors to adapt and grow despite chronic issues and challenges it continues to face.

Today, the world continues to face threats, both natural and man-made, as a result of rapid urbanization, climate change, and political conflict among others. It is important that efforts are streamlined into forming resilient communities that can protect and improve people’s lives, mitigate the effects of climate change, and advance development.

This year’s summit showcased projects and engagements of Xavier Ateneo’s SLP that have contributed to building resilient communities in Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental, and Bukidnon. It was attended by guests from the academe, local government units, and partners from the Jesuit mission district.

The summit featured service learning engagements related to the following themes: Resiliency in Good Governance and the Environment, Resiliency in Livelihood and Agriculture, and Resiliency in Peace and Education

The summit featured testimonials of partners, faculty, and students. Fr Bros Flores SJ, school director of Pangantucan Community High School, where the XU School of Education made their engagement, shared how service learning made an impact in conveying hope among its learners

Students have become bearers of hope in the Jesuit mission schools of Bukidnon by being “living proofs” of how the Universal Apostolic Preference can be lived out.

The energy, creativity, and commitment of these students have inspired learners in their school to pay it forward as they serve as volunteer teachers in a local high school.

Engr Ingrid Yvonne Madrial, Social Development coordinator of the College of Engineering, shared how service learning complemented the academic goals of the college by providing a space for students to concretize Xavier Ateneo’s mission of serving others through their various fields of expertise.

Aside from academic formation, Madrial shared how the program encouraged the students to empathize with the needs of the community as well as to be more critical on the issues and problems that beset them.

For Audrey Therese Yu, a graduating engineering student and president of the XU Central Student Government, service learning has magnified the importance of her degree in advancing the development of communities in the field of agricultural sustainability.

She has seen the social impact of the skills and competencies forged through one’s education on communities and sectors that continue to face social inequities.

The summit had affirmed the value of “Education for Social Justice” which serves as a rallying point for service learning as a framework to introduce a formative education that seeks to correct marginalization and social injustice.

While academic competencies are important, Xavier Ateneo recognizes that a meaningful education requires a commitment to develop solutions to problems that propagate social exclusion.

Xavier Ateneo, through the SLP, hopes to influence the educational landscape of the country by forming students who are not only competent but more importantly, compassionately committed to change society.∎
