The Research & Social Outreach (RSO) of Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan hosted  the Study Visit for Policy Influencing on Urban Agriculture of the Delegation from the Western Province of Sri Lanka on August 27- 28, 2010.

The delegates headed by Hon Minister Udaya Prabath Gammanpila of the Western Province Ministry of Agriculture, Agrarian Development, Minor Irrigation, Industries and Environment, with his Secretary Sisira T. Kodikara, Assistant Directors, B.A. Nimali H. Perera and P. Mano Y. Dharmabandhu, and Victor Samaraweera, Chief Secretary of the Western Province of Sri Lanka, visited the Urban Allotment Gardens developed by the Peri-urban Vegetable Project of Xavier University.

Hon Gammanpila and company toured the Hillside Garden at Barangay Lapasan, the RUAF Christa Holtz Allotment Garden in Barangay Macasandig, and the St. Ignatius Allotment Garden of Xavier University in Manresa.

Allotment gardens are a special type of community gardens that facilitate the legal access of poor families to vacant spaces for agricultural activities. Furthermore, most of the gardens are equipped with urine-diverting dehydration toilets (UDDT), which improve the sanitary conditions of the area.

After their exposure to the community gardens, the delegates took a side trip to the Gardens of Malasag (Eco-Tourism Village) where they witnessed Mindanao indigenous folk culture and immersed in the beauty of the city’s natural landscape.
