The Student Entrepreneurship Program recently conducted a Social Entrepreneurship Seminar-Workshop last April 27-28 at the Pryce Entrepreneurship Laboratory (AVR4). Four student social enterprises were awarded by the SEP additional capitalization to assist them in their projects. These four groups of students will be working to affect the lives of four different communities -- housewives of Tagoloan, rebel returnee coconut farmers of Balingasag, abaca weavers of Lagonglong and 2 urban garden communities in CDO.

Eco-friendly back packs; hand bags out of recycled paper; healthy sugar substitute in the form of coco sugar; and organic fertilizer in the form of vermicast – these are the products that these groups chose, studied, planned for, and defended. These have been endorsed by their Business Administration instructors for their financial, technical, marketing, and management soundness, and approved by the SEP for its social impact.

Ms Memey Mendoza, Smart Communications’ Community Building Manager, Public Affairs and Board Member of the multi-awarded social enterprise Rags2Riches, reinforced these students’ orientation on Social Entrepreneurship, and through the MAGIK SANGKAP tools of a social entrepreneur, fine-tuned their businesses to follow in the footsteps of trailblazers like Rags2Riches, Hapinoy and GK Nakar.

Doorways of opportunities were also opened for their budding enterprises. Possible linkages with the national network of Gawad Kalinga and businesses of Ateneo de Manila University alumni were noted. Smart also offered to provide assistance in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and a learning visit to some of the country’s successful social enterprises is now being arranged to deepen the students’ understanding and appreciation of social entrepreneurship concepts.

All these efforts pave the way for XU to make a mark in the field of Social Entrepreneurship, to aim for magis in business, and to engage the frontier.
