Peace is commonly understood as the absence of conflict; it labels a society or a relationship that is functioning harmoniously. Peace Education then has been one of the efforts not only of Xavier University but also of other sectors in the society to help people understand and build a culture of peace in the country especially in Mindanao. It is in this light that the Research and Social Outreach Office together with the Peace Education Center of Xavier University will hold a Peace Education Colloquium with the theme: Journeying toward a Peaceful Mindanao: A Colloquium on Signposts, Challenges, and Hopes in Education for a Culture of Peace on May 2-4, 2011 at the Xavier University Nursing Amphitheater.

The Peace Education Colloquium will have three components: first, the participants will hear of stories/experiences in facilitating 25 years of Peace Education in Mindanao; second, there will be workshops that would look into the integration of peace concepts; and third, there will be an actual engagement to the peace process. Representatives from the different Peace sectors will be joining the said event. Furthermore, the organizers also invited presenters who would share their experiences about facilitating Peace Education. Some of these presenters include Dr. Toh Swee Hin, Mr. Ben Abadiano, Dr. Ester Sevilla, and Fr. Albert Alejo.

It is the organizers’ hope that this Peace Education Colloquium will promote optimism that peace is still possible in the face of a seemingly confused society.
