Xavier University headlined the celebration of the Social Consciousness Month with a photo exhibit of the Konrad Adenauer Asian Center for Journalism (ACFJ) at the Ateneo de Manila University titled “Asian News in Pictures.”
The exhibit installed at the School of Business and Management Ground Floor Lobby and will run from February 2 to 19, 2011, featured photos of ACFJ students–most of whom are practicing journalists– who took up the Diploma in Photojournalism program.
Among the displays are that of Rony Zakaria, the Indonesian photographer who recently won in the 2010 National Press Photography Awards; VJ Villafranca, winner of the 2008 Ian Perry Award in Photojournalism; Rogelio Luis Liwanag, former chief photographer of the Xinhua News Agency in Manila; and Philippine Daily Inquirer photographers Emilyn Hope Rillon, Remar Zamora and Rafael Lerma.
The pictures were taken from all over Asia and capture the diversity of issues that confronts the continent such as social injustice, conflicts, poverty and climate change. The exhibit also aims to depict hope and inspiration amid the hard times. There are a total of six photo essays and twenty-five single pictures on display.
“A moment spent looking at a photograph means a lot to those who took these photos, more so to those who are in them,” ADMU Communication Department Chair Severino Sarmenta Jr, said during his opening remarks.
This event is a product of the collaboration of the XU Research and Social Outreach Office, the XU Development Communication Department and the ACFJ. XU-RSO has declared the month of February as Social Consciousness Month and at the same time the National Arts Month bearing the theme “Engaging the Frontiers towards Sustainable Life for all Minadanaons.” The photo exhibit is only one of the many activities that have been lined up for the month.
“Asian News in Pictures” is currently on the 6th stop of its road show. After XU, the exhibit will move to the Limketkai Mall, Cagayan de Oro City where it will be mounted for public viewing from February 20 to 28.
