Kuwentuhang Bayan (KB) Participants with the Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan (SLB) Facilitators during the KB Training of Trainers last 28 January 2024 at VIP Hotel.
In a concerted effort to foster civic and political education, Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan (SLB), a non-partisan, Church-based, Jesuit-led organization, has partnered with the Social Involvement and Advocacy Program of Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan to launch the Kwentuhang Bayan (KB) Facilitator's Training. This initiative stands as a beacon of empowerment, aiming to encourage collective action for the common good. The primary focus is on equipping educators, CSO leaders, Community/SK Youth Leaders, Student Governments, and like-minded groups in various cities across the Philippines with the tools for effective civic engagement.
As the socio-political arm of the Jesuits in the Philippines, SLB has consistently demonstrated a commitment to the service of the Church and the Filipino people. Through continuing education for citizenship, good governance, and issue advocacy, SLB strives to instill values of social responsibility and active participation in the socio-political landscape.
The Kwentuhang Bayan Facilitator's Training has attracted diverse participants, ranging from Xavier Ateneo's Student Political Parties (USAD-Xavier, DASIG, and Alyansang Atenista) to the Social Action Center of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro. The training also welcomed student leaders from the Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School and Sanguniang Kabataan representatives from Bulua, Lanao, and Baybay. Non-government organizations and interest-based groups, including MASS SPEC, Payo, Hirang ng Hiraya, and Sinla Tumpagon, also actively participated.
The success of the Kwentuhang Bayan Facilitator's Training was further bolstered by the support of various offices within Xavier Ateneo, including the National Service Training Program and the Student Activities and Leadership Development Office under the Office of Student Affairs. This collaboration reflects the university's dedication to nurturing socially aware and responsible leaders.
Mr Miguel Karlo Abadines, current SLB Executive Director, facilitated the runthrough of the KB modules.
The training was led by Mr Miguel Karlo Abadines, the newly installed SLB Executive Director. In his address, Abadines emphasized the critical role of the training in shaping the youth's consciousness regarding the country's political situation. He highlighted the importance of collective action, emphasizing that this year's KB differs from the 2016 run due to its heightened emphasis on political party reform as a response to issues such as political dynasties and rampant vote-buying during elections in the Philippines. He was joined by Ms Cecille Marie Turrecha, Associate Director and Ms Nikki Frias, Senior Program Officer
The 2024 Kwentuhang Bayan Facilitator's Training stands out for its emphasis on collective action and political party reform. Participants were engaged in discussions and activities aimed at instigating positive change and addressing pressing issues in the Philippine political landscape. The program serves as a platform for participants to explore avenues for collaboration, pushing back against systemic challenges and fostering a renewed commitment to the common good.

The Kwentuhang Bayan Facilitator's Training, a collaborative effort between SLB and Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan, is a testament to the transformative power of education in advancing civic and political reforms. As participants return to their respective communities, it is hoped that the modules and discussions may be integrated to their formation programs and even encourage them to create their own political formation programs to help mold a more politically conscious and engaged citizenry.
