The 3rd CCS Research Forum at Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan College of Computer Studies (XU-CCS) was a showcase of the innovative and impactful research projects undertaken by graduating fourth-year students. The event, held at Faber Hall (FH) 201–203 on 10 May 2024, centered on the theme "Advancing the Nexus of Computing Research for the Community." It was organized by the research coordinator of the college, Engr Maria Ramila Jimenez.
The forum began with a solemn invocation and the singing of the national anthem, setting a respectful tone for the proceedings. Ms Marie Antonette Emata, the coordinator of the Xavier Ateneo – Knowledge and Technology Transfer Office, delivered the opening address, underscoring the significance of the students' research efforts in advancing knowledge on utilization of technologies.
Distinguished judges composed of Engr Florence Reyes, Kryzler Baac, and Charlane Vallar for CS-EMC category, Lecille Blessie Ladera, Jhon Raymond Macaraeg, and Izsa Mae Gucila for the IT-IS category, attended the event, adding prestige and expertise to the assessment of the students' research. The presentations were organized into parallel sessions to accommodate the different focus areas of the students' projects. Information Technology (IT) and Information Systems (IS) students presented at FH 201, while Computer Science (CS) and Entertainment and Multimedia Computing (EMC) students showcased their work at FH 202–203.
Several presentations stood out for their innovation and impact. "Evaluating the Effectiveness of SVM Using Students' Behavior from LMS Data" was recognized as the Best Presentation in the Computer Science category, highlighting the use of machine learning in educational contexts. In the IT category, "Streamlining XU Campus Security: A Dynamic QR Code Entry/Exit Visitor Management System" impressed the judges with its practical application of technology to enhance campus security.
IS and EMC students also received accolades for their capstone projects. "Utilization of A Web-Based Request System for the Communication and Promotions Office of Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan" demonstrated effective use of web technology for office management, while "MontiEdu: An Interactive Simulation for Students in MMS Child Development Center" showcased innovative educational tools for child development.
Cash prizes were awarded to the overall best presentations, with the best IT presentation claiming the top spot. The best presentations from EMC and CS took 2nd and 3rd place, respectively, reflecting the diversity and quality of research across the different disciplines.
Research posters of the students’ research are also posted on the walls of FH 202. Students interested in knowing more about each group’s thesis and capstone project can read through the posters.
The event concluded with closing remarks from CCS Dean Dr Meldie Apag, who emphasized the importance of research beyond academic requirements. The forum not only celebrated the achievements of the graduating students but also highlighted the College of Computer Studies' commitment to advancing computing research for the betterment of the community.
