Assistant Cultural Affairs Officer at the US Embassy in Manila, William B Cocks, was at Xavier University on July 12 for a lecture presentation on educational opportunities in the US held at the American Corner of the XU Libraries.

It was the first time for Cocks to speak before a crowd of students since he assumed office in June this year. He shared on the various opportunities for Filipino students to study in the US and learn about American culture, such as the Fulbright International Education Exchange Program, Global Undergraduate Exchange Program, International Visitor Leadership Program, Philippine Youth Leadership Program and the Youth Exchange and Study Program. Many XU students are alumni of these programs.

“What I learned about American universities is that they’re really, really difficult,” said Cocks. “When you finish, you have a degree that’s really valuable.” He encouraged his student-audience to apply for applicable US exchange programs.

“You’ll meet people from all over Asia, Africa and Europe,” Cocks continued, highlighting the presence of numerous international students in American universities and colleges. “You’ll meet people from everywhere,” he said.

Apart from the US exchange programs, Cocks also pointed out other tracks that students who want to study abroad can pursue considering the high cost of studying in American universities. He suggested enrolling in state universities or applying to private universities as a teaching or research assistant to take advantage of scholarships or grants.  Other countries also offer exchange/scholarship programs that students can explore, Cocks said. The idea is for students to capitalize on many available education programs where they can enhance their learning.
