The XU Libraries held a stakeholders' consultative meeting and planning workshop on Oct 24 with resource speakers from the Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University to help XU build its learning spaces and ready its libraries for millennium users who are adept in using ICT applications.

Prof Lourdes T David, director of Libraries at the Ateneo de Manila University, and Ms Ana Maria B Fresnido, director of Libraries at the De La Salle University, shared their experience in developing the Rizal Library of the Ateneo and in building the future library/learning spaces at De La Salle to serve as models for XU.

Present in the gathering were Assistant to the President for Campus Development Jaime Ignacio, Academic Vice President Dr Lina Kwong, Physical Plant Director Engr Ramil Pajo, Computing and Information Systems Office Director Harriet Fernandez, Scholarships and Financial Aid Director Cecille Japitana, Computer Studies instructor Paulo Gener, representatives from the Kristohanong Katilingban sa Pagpakabana, Campus Ministries, Central Student Government and the XU Tertiary Level Faculty Association, members of the Academic Council Library Committee, and XU librarians and staff with their Director Estrella Cabudoy.

Engr Gerardo S Doroja, dean of the XU College of Computer Studies and chair of XU’s Academic Council Library Committee, facilitated the workshop which drew up the collective vision of the University community of a modern XU Libraries that is customer centered, endowed with increasing virtual collection and modern equipment, software and hardware to go with current market trends, such as the Kindle, iPad and other android operating systems.

The desire to establish an Information Commons space, a sophisticated learning space with private study areas, group discussion and loud areas, and a coffee shop, among others, also surfaced to promote greater research and collaboration. Training of library personnel, especially in ICT will also be facilitated.

The workshop ended with a symbolic planting of a dream library where the participants placed in a time capsule their desires for and commitment to the enhancement of the XU Libraries, which, together with a tree seedling, was "planted” in the ground.
