The Xavier University community is saying bye-bye to food packaging, containers and decorative materials made of polystyrene, more popularly known as Styrofoam.

XU President Fr Roberto C Yap SJ has issued a memorandum to the XU community prohibiting the entry, use and disposal of polystyrene in all the campuses and activities of the University. The ban also extends to University activities conducted outside XU premises.

“Consistent with the University’s mission to care for the environment and as part of our Green Campus Agenda, we are committed to minimize the use of environmentally hazardous materials, components and packaging of consumer products,” Fr Yap said.

Students are very keen on the new policy. The Central Student Government is enjoining food establishments around XU to support the University’s Green Campus Agenda by discouraging the use of polystyrene in their food packaging, especially for takeout orders.

Further, the University has started the practice of waste segregation at the office level. Offices now have a bin each for biodegradable, non-biodegradable and recyclable wastes. A Committee on Safety, Security and Health (SSH) has also been formed to formulate SSH policies and procedures.
