On 31 August 2024, Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan took part in the XU Atiman Kinaiyahan, an environmental activity held at El Gaucho, Upper Puerto, Cagayan de Oro City. This tree-growing activity, meant to foster environmental sustainability, was accompanied by various stakeholders, including Xavier University (XU) President Fr Mars P Tan SJ, Campus of the Future Project Manager Engr Lennie Ong, and CoF Associate Project Director Ms Ann Charlette Cabana.
The event entailed a collaborative effort between administrators from the Basic and Higher Education Councils, as well as student leaders from the XU-Central Student Government. I, alongside my fellow participants, planted hundreds of bamboo shoots in the area, reflecting our shared dedication to building a greener, more sustainable environment.
Following the planting session, we gathered together once more as an opportunity to reflect on our experiences and share our insights. The sharing focused on a shared sense of accomplishment and a greater awareness of issues related to the environment. As a community, we were hopeful about the impact of our efforts, emphasizing that such projects are imperative for developing a culture of environmental responsibility among the larger community.
Participating in this event made me understand that authentic sustainability is inclusive. Upon arriving at El Gaucho, we came across informal settlers at the property's entrance. Fr Mars gave an assurance that efforts are ongoing to provide them with new housing, showing a commitment to ensure that sustainability benefits everyone, not just those who are fortunate. As we seek to preserve the environment, we must also address the needs of those who are most impacted by these concerns, notably the poor and marginalized. True sustainability involves recognizing these social aspects alongside environmental goals, ensuring that no one falls behind in our pursuit of a more sustainable future. The team highlighted that there are also plans for further tree-growing initiatives to help us reach our target number. This goes to show that we have a well-defined roadmap in place, indicating our dedication to achieving our environmental goals adequately.
In summary, the XU Atiman Kinaiyahan event not only marked a great step toward achieving environmental sustainability, but it also demonstrated the value of inclusivity in our efforts. By taking collective action and addressing the needs of those in need, we express our commitment to a holistic approach to environmental stewardship. As we continue with our anticipated tree-growing efforts, let us remember that genuine sustainability is attained not just through environmental initiatives but also by promoting a just and equitable society for all. Our journey to a greener future is a shared responsibility, and every action counts toward making a lasting, positive impact on both our planet and our communities.
