There is a fine line between being prepared and being ready, as believed by Hilary Kylie B Pacuribot, a Level 4 Bachelor of Science in Nursing student who has recently been honored with the prestigious DAISY Award. In this feature, Pacuribot recounts a real-life incident from her third year in Nursing when she aided a young boy having an unexpected seizure on a jeepney as she was on her way to her hospital duty. “Many nursing students worry they'll freeze up in a crisis, but in reality, our preparation from lecture classes, return demonstrations, and our personal experiences during clinical duties equip us to MANAGE the unexpected. However, I keep in mind that it is only by the heart of compassion and the instinct to serve that carries me to DO the unexpected,” Pacuribot says asserting the importance of serving, showing compassion, and being present in times of vulnerability and unpredictability. By translating her classroom learning into a real-world experience, Pacuribot truly embodies the spirit of an Atenean student nurse.
Indeed, while preparation lays the groundwork, trusting one’s ability to overcome and adapt to the unknown are the binding forces of nursing. Pacuribot therefore concludes that true readiness comes not from knowing every possible problem but from the willingness to step into uncertainty, trusting what you know, and acting on it with strength and resilience.
Pacuribot is the second nursing student from Xavier University - College of Nursing to receive this prestigious award. By inspiring nurses to provide extraordinary care not only with their brains but also with their hearts, the DAISY Award highlights the essence of compassion in healthcare.
