Xavier University recently hosted Critical Thinking in the Age of Artificial Intelligence, a talk by Fr Jose Luis “Lito” Salazar, SJ, PhD on 25 October 2024 at the XU Little Theater. University President Fr Mars P Tan, SJ, opened the event with remarks on the importance of critical thinking in today’s digital world, followed by an introduction of the guest speaker by Fr Frank Dennis B Savadera, SJ. Dr Carthelyn C Adajar hosted the session.
Fr Frank Dennis B Savadera, SJ, introduced the guest speaker. Fr Lito’s dialog was divided into three parts: “The Age of AI,” “Teaching Critical Thinking,” and “Beyond Knowing: Valuing, Doing, Loving.” He explained that to understand the world, we must give it meaning and value and noted that “everything comes tumbling down without critical thinking.”
Fr Lito encouraged attendees to reflect on what makes us truly human, and to be truly human we must obey the imperatives, these being: “Be Attentive, Be Intelligent, Be Reasonable, Be Responsible, Be Loving.”
With technology changing quickly, Fr Lito reminded everyone that “AI only gives you data, not real intelligence.” He encouraged people to combine human knowledge with values to make thoughtful choices in an AI-driven world.
