The Biology Department of Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan has been awarded a thesis grant from the DOST-PCHRD’s Undergraduate Thesis Grant in Natural Products program. The grant is worth 75,000 pesos, to support the thesis titled ‘Antibacterial Potentials and Cytotoxicity Activity of Macroalgae Mastophora rosea’. The winners are Mary Rose Josephine S Bosi and Mikaela Mae C Cabanlas.

This study is mentored by their thesis adviser, Dr Judy P Sendaydiego, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Biology Department faculty member. The study aims to investigate the medicinal properties of the macroalga Mastophora rosea which focuses on the antibacterial and cytotoxic effects. The researchers will also assess the potential of this marine algae as a source of bioactive compounds for the development of natural antibacterial agents to combat harmful bacterial strains.

This award reflects the Biology Department’s commitment to promoting innovative scientific research that enables sustainable use of marine resources for medicinal purposes. The Biology Department is also recognized by CHED as a center of development.
