Xavier University continues to elevate its nursing program to new heights with the launch of the groundbreaking Student Nurses’ International Learning Program (SNILP) in Bangkok, Thailand from 29 January 2025 to 3 February 2025. This initiative represents a significant step towards internationalizing the institution’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) curriculum. The SNILP aims at equipping graduates with the ideologies aligned to international competence, global citizenship and cultural sensitivity, essential for navigating the dynamic healthcare landscape. Ninety-six (96) Xavier University Student Nurses participated in the activity and were accompanied by six (6) clinical instructors.

The program began with a visit at the Philippine Embassy in Bangkok hosted by Her Excellency Millicent Cruz Paredes and the embassy’s Economic section thereby providing students a peek at governance structures and initiatives for Filipinos abroad suggestive of their own future international presence as health professionals soon after their Xavier University education is completed.

While cultural exploration, visiting historical sites, and experiencing local life through activities like visiting the floating market are also integral components of the program which emphasizes entrepreneurship principles and cultural diversity, Dean Mary Grace Malana Paayas, RN, MAN, PhD, of the Xavier University College of Nursing (XUCN), emphasizes that the “SNILP is more than just an international travel experience. It is an investment in the future of nursing, cultivating globally competitive and culturally sensitive practitioners who can thrive in a rapidly changing world.”
The SNILP also included a visit to the Grand Palace, Saduak Floating Market, The Sanctuary of Truth in Pattaya,
the various cultural and heritage sites, and a rich experience of food and traditions
The program offers a diverse range of experiences for Xavier University students, including clinical facility tours at Yanhee International Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery Hospital, where they can observe advanced nursing practices in specialized areas like cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery. Student Nurses were able to see the hospital’s advanced sterilization facility, hyperbaric chambers, chelation rooms, hospital suites, dental wing, wellness centers, slimming rooms, operating rooms and many more.
The SNILP provides a unique and invaluable opportunity for student nurses to gain global perspectives by experiencing firsthand healthcare systems, challenges, and innovations in the context of another country. This firsthand exposure broadens their understanding of global health issues and best practices. Furthermore, navigating a new cultural context enhances their communication skills, adaptability, and sensitivity to diverse patient populations. The program also allows student nurses to converse on, observe, and introspect on clinical rotations, patient presentations, diagnoses, and treatment approaches, thereby enhancing their clinical skills and knowledge base.

The SNILP delegation was received generously and graciously by Yanhee International Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery Hospital and was given a grand tour of the world class and internationally accredited medical, health, and wellness facility. Students were shown how traditional medicine is integrated with modern medical approaches thereby emphasizing how the care profession can preserve and promote traditional practices. Dr Ismael E Naypa Jr, Director of Yanhee International Marketing Division, hosted the event and delivered a lecture on health entrepreneurship, medical tourism, and cutting edge plastic and cosmetic surgical procedures. The hospital observation allowed students to imagine themselves working in multicultural teams, an international standardized faicility and equipment in the delivery of health care for non-Filipino clients. It was made more interesting that students were able to imagine themselves caring for who have undergone procedures that their base and training hospital roations cannot allow them to appreciate.
The inaugural SNILP also leverages on a new connection between Xavier University and the Mahidol University International College (MUIC) and the Mahidol University Faculty of Nursing (MUFON). This collaboration leverages the shared cultural values and respect for elders, family, and community.

The SNILP, with its emphasis on transcultural care, recognizes the profound importance of exploring culturally diverse non-Filipino settings for Xavier University Nursing students and faculty. Beyond clinical immersion, the program strategically incorporates visits to culturally enriching sites like the Erawadee Traditional Medicine Shop, Bangkok Gems Gallery, and the Ratchaburi Province, offering valuable insights into Thai traditional medicine, craftsmanship, and rural life. Experiencing the vibrant Damnoen Saduak Floating Market and the captivating Chang Puak Elephant Camp fosters a deeper understanding of local livelihoods and cultural practices. Visits to historical and artistic landmarks like the Thai Grand Palace and the Sanctuary of Truth in Pattaya provide a rich tapestry of Thai history, art, and spirituality. Moreover, exploring bustling markets like Pratunam Market and the renowned Chatuchak Weekend Market not only allows students to experience Thai entrepreneurialism firsthand but also cultivates an entrepreneurial mindset, encouraging them to think creatively and adapt to diverse economic and social contexts. These experiences, interwoven with clinical learning, empower students to become globally competent nurses with a profound understanding of cultural diversity and a strong foundation for providing culturally sensitive and patient-centered care.
By fostering cultural understanding, knowledge sharing, and skill development, the Xavier University SNILP empowers the next generation of Filipino nurses to become truly global citizens, ready to make a significant impact on healthcare worldwide.
