Ms Catalina H Gaite, a faculty of Xavier University’s History and International Studies Department, was inducted into the Academia Filipina de la Lengua Española last on 25 February 2025 at the Casino Español de Manila.

The Academia Filipina de la Lengua Española (Philippine Academy of the Spanish Language) is an association of academicians and experts whose contributions have enriched and expanded efforts and initiatives supporting Spanish Language Education in the Philippines. The Academy was established on 13 July 1924 and belongs to the global association of Spanish Language Academies. Among the Academy’s very notable honorary members are historian Epifanio de los Santos, Former President of the Philippines Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, poet Francisco Zaragoza, and Cardinal Jaime Sin.

Ms Gaite is one of the six newly inducted members of the Academy. Joining her in the distinguished list of inductees are National Historical Commissioner and Ateneo de Manila History Professor Dr Francis Navarro, Ateneo de Manila Spanish Language Professor Ms Maria Luisa Young y Palafox, University of the Philippines Diliman Department of European Languages’ Professor Dr Anna Sibayan-Sarmiento, Writer-poet Mr Edwin Lozada, and Executive Director of Vibal Foundation Mr Gaspar Vibal.

Ms Gaite has been teaching Spanish in XU for more than 20 years. She has been very engaged in promoting foreign language education and in putting Xavier Ateneo at the forefront of Spanish language education in Mindanao. As emphasized in her seven-minute speech (see transcription below), Xavier University remains committed to advancing Spanish language education in Mindanao.

Estimada directora Daisy López, estimados señores y señoras académicos, señores y señoras, amigos, muy buenas tardes a todos Procedo de Iligan, una pequeña ciudad en el norte de Mindanao. Cuando decidí matricularme en lenguas extranjeras con especialización en español, no fue para estudiar una carrera en enseñanza de lenguas, sino para hacer una carrera relacionada con algo “internacional.”  Cuando entraba en los pasillos de la universidad de Filipinas, me sentía muy pequeñita, pero al mismo tiempo, muy alucinada por el ritmo académico.   Y así comenzó mi viaje de admiración, un camino pavimentado por la belleza de la lengua española y guiado por sus generosos y apasionados profesores.   A mi regreso a Mindanao, la escasez de profesores de español me impulsó a aceptar un puesto de docente. Esa decisión, hace casi treinta años, me ha mantenido en el aula desde entonces junto con mis deberes administrativos.

En septiembre del año pasado, el académico Don Wystan de la Peña, que me hizo llorar en una de nuestras clases de literatura en la universidad, y que ha sido un buen amigo desde entonces, me hizo la propuesta de hacerme miembro académico. Debo confesar que mis primeras emociones fueron de sorpresa e incertidumbre, pero al final me invadió el asombro y la gratitud.

Por hacerme creer que merezco este honor, ofrezco mi más sincero agradecimiento a él y los académicos que presentaron mi candidatura y confiaron en mis esfuerzos.  Me comprometo a esforzarme al máximo para colaborar en las tareas de la academia.

Permítanme destacar estas líneas de un informe de la RAE en 2023 sobre La importancia de la labor del profesorado La vocación docente no se obtiene mediante recetas ni se alcanza siguiendo ordenadamente los pasos estipulados en alguna estrategia didáctica dirigida a adquirir compromisos y responsabilidades. Ningún docente podrá transmitir a sus estudiantes el estímulo que requiere el aprendizaje ni la ilusión por el conocimiento si no alberga previamente esos sentimientos en su interior…que se ha insistido en la formación y en la actualización del profesorado, aun reconociendo que ambas son más necesarias en unas materias que en otras. Conviene resaltar ahora que los docentes sólo podrán trasladar a sus alumnos el afán por comprender la realidad —y hasta por concebir nuevas realidades— si ellos mismos están imbuidos de ese mismo afán.

Ahora, me complace compartir con este estimado organismo el compromiso inquebrantable de Xavier University para avanzar la enseñanza del idioma español en Mindanao. Para mejorar aún más esta posición, estamos llevando a cabo varias iniciativas claves:

En primer lugar, el establecimiento de un Aula Cervantes: Actualmente estamos desarrollando un proyecto de colaboración con el Instituto Cervantes para establecer un Aula Cervantes, dedicado a atender las necesidades de aprendizaje del español de la comunidad más amplia, más allá de la universidad.

En segundo lugar, invertimos en la formación del profesorado: (1) Priorizamos el desarrollo continuo del profesorado a través de la participación en talleres y programas de capacitación para garantizar la más alta calidad de la instrucción. Una nota especial: en los últimos tres años académicos, hemos tenido aproximadamente 900 estudiantes por año. Esta cifra refleja la necesidad critica de formación de profesores.

Y finalmente pero no menos importante, enriqueciendo la experiencia de aprendizaje: Ahora estamos integrando excursiones académicas y culturales en nuestro plan de estudios para fomentar la comprensión cultural y alentar a los estudiantes a desarrollar sensibilidad cultural.

Creo que el futuro de la lengua española radica en su capacidad de abrazar la innovación y preservar sus valores fundamentales.  Por lo tanto, debemos continuar fomentando el diálogo y la colaboración con académicos y profesionales del lenguaje de todo el mundo de habla hispana para garantizar que siga siendo un lenguaje vibrante e inclusivo, capaz de reflejar las diversas realidades de los tiempos. Debemos trabajar juntos para garantizar que el idioma español continúe prosperando como un poderoso instrumento de comunicación, expresión cultural y creatividad.

Para concluir, me comprometo a dedicarme a la promoción de la lengua española encaminadas a la enseñanza.  Me esforzaré por mantener los más altos estándares de excelencia lingüística, especialmente en mi enseñanza, y me esforzaré por contribuir al trabajo continuo de la Academia.

Por último, quisiera expresar mi sincera gratitud a mis colegas, mentores y familiares, cuyo apoyo inquebrantable ha sido fundamental en mi viaje, - sin su apoyo, no estaría aquí. Estoy profundamente agradecida por su ánimo y consejos.  Me gustaría compartir este honor, que representa para mí un inmenso privilegio que nunca soñé alcanzar, con ellos. Gracias por su atención y muchas gracias por su confianza.

Xavier University at the Forefront of Spanish Teaching in Mindanao

Distinguished Director Daisy López, esteemed academicians, ladies and gentlemen, and friends, good afternoon to you all.

I am from Iligan, a small city in Northern Mindanao. I chose to major in Foreign Languages with a specialization in Spanish—not to teach, but to pursue international affairs. My first visit to the University of the Philippines filled me with awe at its vibrant atmosphere. When I returned to Mindanao, I accepted a teaching position due to a shortage of Spanish teachers. That decision, made nearly three decades ago, has led me to a fulfilling career in both teaching and administration.

Last September, my former professor, Don Wystan de la Peña, whom I deeply respect, invited me to join as an academician. Initially surprised and uncertain, I soon felt overwhelming amazement and gratitude. He helped me realize my worthiness for this honor, and I sincerely thank him and the academicians who nominated me and believed in my efforts. I promise to contribute fully to the Academy’s goals.

Here are key points from a 2023 RAE report on the importance of professors’ work.

The vocation to teach can’t be learned through strict methods or strategies. A teacher must first possess a genuine enthusiasm for knowledge and learning to inspire students. While training and updating teachers is important, especially in certain subjects, teachers can only convey the desire to understand and envision new realities if they share that same desire themselves.

I am pleased to share Xavier University’s strong commitment to advancing Spanish language teaching in Mindanao. To strengthen this effort, we are launching several key initiatives: First, we are developing a collaborative project with the Instituto Cervantes to create a Cervantes Classroom focused on meeting the Spanish language learning needs of the wider community. Second, we prioritize continuous teacher development through workshops and training programs to ensure high-quality teaching. Over the past three academic years, around 900 students have enrolled, highlighting the urgent need for teacher training. Lastly, we now include academic and cultural field trips in our curriculum to promote understanding and foster cultural sensitivity among students. The future of the Spanish language relies on embracing innovation while preserving its core values. To ensure it remains vibrant and inclusive, we must foster collaboration with academics and language professionals across the Hispanophone world. Together, we can ensure Spanish thrives as a powerful tool for communication and expression.

I pledge to promote the Spanish language in education and contribute to the Academia’s efforts by maintaining high standards of linguistic excellence in my teaching.

I want to thank my colleagues, mentors, and family for their unwavering support throughout my journey. Their encouragement and advice have been invaluable. I am truly honored to share this achievement with them. Thank you for your attention and trust.

Aside from being a faculty of XU, Ms Gaite is also the Executive Assistant of the University President and the university Corporate Secretary. The XU community congratulates Ma’am Cathy on this important and prestigious achievement.
