Xavier University Junior High School (XUJHS) recently held its annual Magis Awards on 21 March 2025, at the Junior High School Covered Courts, a special occasion that honored the outstanding contributions of students, faculty, parents, and organizations. The event celebrated not just achievements, but the Ignatian values of integrity, service, and leadership that define the school’s community.
The Magis Awards ceremony began with an inspiring address by Dr Samuel Macagba III, Assistant Principal for Formation at XUJHS, who highlighted the importance of leadership rooted in integrity. In his opening remarks, Dr Macagba reminded the audience that leadership is not about accolades, but about doing what is right—even when no one is watching. He commended the student leaders for their commitment to service, emphasizing that their true strength lies in the values of honesty, purpose, and dedication.
"Leadership without integrity is just ambition. But leadership with integrity? That’s Magis. That’s the Ignatian way," Dr Macagba said, reinforcing that the Magis Awards is not only about recognizing accomplishments but about shaping leaders who embody these core principles.
Dr Macagba also acknowledged the significant role of parents and mentors in supporting the students. He thanked them for their sacrifices and continued belief in the students' potential. His closing words served as a reminder that leadership is a continuous journey, one that requires constant reflection and commitment to the greater good.
Following Dr Macagba’s remarks, the audience was inspired by a message from Ms Roxette Joan Flores, a former Magis Awardee and Chairperson of the Light Cavalry Leadership Community. Now an Administrative Officer at the City Education and Development Office (CEDO), Ms Flores shared her journey from a young Xavier student with big dreams to a professional making an impact in local governance and global organizations.
Reflecting on her own childhood ambition of becoming the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ms Flores spoke about how her time at Xavier shaped her aspirations. She shared how her education at XUJHS, particularly the Ignatian formation, guided her in becoming a person for others. She emphasized the importance of service and involvement, both within school and the broader community, as key components of true leadership.
"My encouragement to all of you, dear junior high school students, is to always remember your formation at XU. Get involved as much as you can, in school, in your communities, in our society," Ms Flores advised, urging the students to live out the values they have been taught at Xavier.
Ms Flores also credited her mentors for encouraging her growth, mentioning how their belief in her, even in moments of doubt, had been instrumental in her success. She concluded her speech with a heartwarming quote from the animated short film The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” the mole asked. “Kind,” the boy replied. “I want to be kind.”
Her message was clear: while success and recognition are valuable, kindness remains the most important trait to carry forward in life.
The Magis Awards 2025 served as a reminder of the power of integrity, leadership, and service. With the words of both Dr Macagba and Ms Flores, the event inspired the next generation of Xavier leaders to continue walking the path of service, kindness, and purpose. As the ceremony concluded, it was evident that the legacy of Magis will continue to guide these young leaders as they move forward in their journey.
