A processing and marketing training of a sea urchin’s roe was conducted at the Food Technology Center, Manresa Complex, Cagayan de Oro City last November 5-6 by the Xavier University – McKeough Marine Center (XU-MMC) through its Ecosystem Alliance – International Union for Conservation of Nature (EA-IUCN) funded program entitled: Strengthening the Ridge to Reef Ecosystem Management Approach for Sustainable Development.

The edible part of the sea urchin known as 'roe' is the reproductive organ of the animal.  It is commonly eaten due to its beneficial health properties such as high protein content, fiber, vitamins C, A & E, iodine and calcium. The activity was coordinated by Mr. Warwin Sabasaje, Ms. Jo Marie Acero and Ms. Cris Remotigue of the XU-MMC. The participants were trained by Processing Trainer, Ms. Sylvia Aguhob, and Marketing Trainer, Mr. Elenito Duran, both from the XU College of Agriculture. Seventeen (17) participants from the coastal communities attended the training: nine (9) coming from the Women’s Association and Local Government unit of Murciellagos Bay in Zamboanga del Norte and eight (8) coming from Macajalar Bay Development Alliance.

The participants were given an in-depth training on how to utilize and maximize the potential of sea urchins as a means of sustainable alternative livelihood for the coastal community. Proper handling and marketing strategy were thoroughly incorporated in the training. The trainers, likewise, imparted their knowledge and skills in preserving the natural environment while going into livelihood venture such as this. It was a spoken advocacy not to destroy the natural resources and its environs in any endeavor to raise money for a living. The training was a success as it gained positive reactions from the participants.
