In celebration of the Research and Social Outreach Month and as an information education campaign, McKeough Marine Center (MMC) organized a Giant Clam and its Ecosystem Awareness activity at the Agutayan Island, Jasaan, Misamis Oriental on Feb 5.

The activity, held at the MMC Activity Center in Jasaan, was spearheaded by Czarmayne Escoro and participated in by 20 students and staff from Marine Biology, NSTP-ISDA and MMC.

The lecture featured a community of giant clam species in Tridacna gigas in Agutayan, its ecological importance, its current conditions, and the threats against it. The activity culminated with swimming and snorkeling activities, allowing the participants to experience an up close encounter with the beautiful giant clams. MMC hoped that the activity would ignite participants’ interest to protect the marine ecosystem and its inhabitants, such as the clams.
