The College of Agriculture Agricultural Economics Department bagged the topped prize in the 13th Young Economists’ Convention- Outstanding Paper Competition on March 7-8 at De La Salle University, Taft Avenue, Manila.

The winning research is entitled “Analysis of Brewer Spent Grain from Asia Brewery to its Utilization for Cattle Feed by Backyard Farmers.”  Ms Charisse Vitor, former Kinaadman Student Support for Research awardee for SY 2012-2013 and current faculty member of the Agricultural Economics unit authored the said research. It was presented by Mr Franz Darwin Gallofin, a 4th year Agricultural Economics student. Ms. Jerelyn Medalla, his research adviser, was also present in the event. This was the first time that the Agricultural Economics Unit represented the University in the competition.

The event was organized to initiate critical thinking among young economists and improve student research for policy development in the interest of nation building. It is the venue for economics students to share their insights and be recognized for excellent research in the field of economics.

The event was the final round of the national search for best research paper. Five universities qualified for the national competition but only four joined the competition. The participating universities were winners in the regional level.  The XU team won during the Mindanao competition held at the Xavier University Little Theater in November 2013.

The University of the Philippines finished 2nd place, University of Baguio in third place and, De La Salle University in fourth place.
