Xavier University held the soft launching of its Solar Electric Generation Facility, with the theme “Powering a Sustainable Future,” on 28 November 2025, 9:00 to 10:30AM, at the Lecture Space of the XU Senior High School Building. This important ceremony formalizes the partnership between US Mindanao Renewable Energy Corporation and Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan as the university continues to advance its sustainability goals.

XU President Fr Mars P Tan, SJ warmly welcomed the partners and guests, expressing his profound gratitude to those who have supported the university’s sustainability initiatives. He specifically acknowledged Mr Henry B Howard, CEO and President of USMREC; Mr Cecilio U Sumaoy, COO and President of Minergy Philippines; and Mr Andrew P Donggay, CEO of Greenergy Development Corporation. Fr Mars highlighted the significance of the project in promoting XU’s steadfast commitment to environmental stewardship. He emphasized that this endeavor is fully aligned with the institutional green campus agenda and its broader mission to promote ecological responsibility and sustainable campus development.

Special guest Mr Henry B Howard, a long-time friend and benefactor of the university, delivered a heartfelt message underscoring the significance of the solar project and his longstanding relationship with XU. He recalled with gratitude his formative years as a Jesuit scholar at Xavier University, noting how these experiences shaped his values and commitment to service. In return, he affirmed his steadfast dedication to his lifelong partnership with the institution—renewing his support for the Henry Howard Scholarship and strengthening his advocacy for XU’s sustainability initiatives and environmentally driven projects.

The program was formally concluded by Mr Francisco F Guerra III, Chair of the XU Board of Trustees. In his closing message, he conveyed deep appreciation to XU’s partners for fostering renewable energy initiatives on campus and within the wider community. He gave special acknowledgement to Mr Howard, whom he recognized as one of the university’s most generous single scholarship donors and a steadfast supporter of XU’s mission.
After the program, the celebration continued with the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the rooftop of the XUSHS building, led by Fr Mars, Mr Howard, Mr Guerra, Mr Sumaoy, and Mr Donggay, marking the official inauguration of the solar generation facility.

Also present at the program and in the ribbon-cutting ceremony were officials from Minergy and Greenergy, Trustee Mr Eduardo F Pelaez, and esteemed university administrators from the Central Administration and the Basic Education, headed by VP for Administration Engr George M Abasolo and VPBE Pamela Q Pajente, PhD.
This project marks a significant milestone in Xavier University’s ongoing commitment to clean and renewable energy, supporting efforts to reduce the campus’s carbon footprint and foster a more sustainable, energy-resilient environment. As a Laudato Si’ university, XU integrates care for creation into its academic, operational, and community initiatives, reflecting the Jesuit mission of ecological stewardship. The solar generation facility not only enhances the university’s Green Campus agenda but also demonstrates how educational institutions can play a meaningful role in promoting environmental sustainability and long-term well-being.
