Xavier University paid a courtesy visit to one of the Philippines’ leading corporations, Philippine Transmarine Corporation (PTC), last 25 November 2025, initiating exploratory discussions on academe-industry, aimed at building long-term partnerships in different areas of engagement.

The university delegation, led by University President Fr Mars P Tan, SJ, was composed of university trustees, including BOT Chair Mr Frank Guerra, BOT Vice Chair Mr Eduardo Pelaez, Atty Camilo Montesa, VP for Higher Education Dr Juliet Dalagan, and ALGCIT Director Ms Olive Lim. They were welcomed by the Vice Chair and CEO of the PTC, Mr Gerardo Borromeo, together with his top executives at its headquarters in Makati City. Both sides expressed enthusiasm for the potential of a collaboration that aligns private-sector innovation with the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, social responsibility, and nation-building.

During the meeting, officials discussed a possible range of initiatives, including academic curricula innovation, internships, advanced technical training, and employment pathways for students, and facility design and development efforts. The conversation also addressed the importance of equipping future leaders with skills suited for rapidly evolving industries, as well as opportunities for technology transfer and sustainable business practices.

University representatives highlighted the institution’s long-standing mission to form “persons for and with others,” emphasizing that strategic alliances with industry leaders allow students and faculty to engage meaningfully with real-world challenges. Corporate executives, meanwhile, expressed interest in employing graduates who are ethical leaders, adaptive to innovation, and committed to service.

Both parties agreed to continue discussions in the coming months. Working groups are expected to be formed to evaluate specific program proposals and identify priority areas for cooperation.

The visit marks an encouraging step toward a partnership that could strengthen links between higher education and industry, contributing to wider national development goals.
