Xavier University – McKeough Advancement for Environment, Resilience, and Sustainability Center (MAERS) successfully hosted “Plastikang Usapan: Possible Research Topics in Plastics” last Monday, 26 January 2026, at the Science Center Building (SC3). The event brought together students from Xavier University and the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines – Cagayan de Oro (USTP-CDO) and faculty members for a focused discussion on emerging research avenues in plastic research.

The lecture was delivered by Rodolfo Romarate II, EnP, PhD, Associate Lecturer at Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU–IIT) and Managing Partner of Simmons Consult. Dr Romarate shared insights on the current status of emerging plastic pollution and presented several possible research topics, including microplastics and plastic pollution pathways to the environment and to humans. These topics highlighted key areas where student research can contribute to both academic knowledge and real-world solutions.

In his talk, Dr Romarate emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary research on plastics, stressing how studies can bridge science and community action in addressing the complexities of plastic pollution and sustainability challenges. Participants actively engaged during the open forum, raising questions about research methodologies, data collection techniques, challenges in conducting plastic research, and opportunities for collaborative studies. The event provided a valuable platform for aspiring researchers to explore research ideas and seek guidance from an expert in the field.
