A central purpose of this year’s Social Development Week celebration last 2 to 5 March 2026 was the formal recognition of Xavier Ateneo’s own SDG Champions. These administrators, faculty, and formators were honored for their sustained engagement in advancing the university’s social development mission and for successfully localizing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). "Long before the SDGs were mapped into frameworks and clusters, you were already embodying them in classrooms, communities, and research sites," noted Engr Dexter S Lo, VP for Social Development. These champions have operationalized what it truly means to nurture legacies by bridging global aspirations with local action.
The university’s social development mission is a multi-faceted approach that combines academic rigor with community engagement. This mission comes to life through the Service Learning Program, which weaves community service into academic instruction, and the Social Involvement and Advocacy Program (SIAP), which catalyzes engagement with pressing societal issues. Beyond the classroom, Institutional Professional Societal Engagement (IPSE) empowers faculty to apply specialized expertise for the public good, while the Social Development Centers act as frontline units providing direct accompaniment to marginalized sectors.
By mainstreaming social responsibility into the very fabric of the curricula and accompanying the vulnerable with both competence and compassion, these awardees have become the true architects of Xavier Ateneo's centennial legacy. As the university looks to its next century, these SDG Champions prove that the mission is not just a statement on a wall, but a person at work in the world.
