Xavier University (XU) recently concluded a high-impact replication training for the SPARK-COIL Project, a key initiative under the Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE) program. The event was held from 22 to 23 April 2026 and it focused on "Designing and Planning Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL)," equipping educators with the expertise to lead internationalized, virtual classrooms.
The Erasmus+ SPARK-COIL project aims to modernize higher education by promoting digital collaboration between local and international institutions. This training served as a vital step in cascading those global standards to the XU faculty.

The training kicked off with a deep dive into the pedagogical framework of COIL. Participants engaged in sessions covering:
- SPARK-COIL Framework: Dr Edralin C Manla delivered a comprehensive overview of the Erasmus+ objectives, detailing how COIL is relevant in contemporary higher education, and its benefits for students, faculty, and institutions.
- Strategic Course Design: Ms Adeva Jane E Kalidas facilitated a deep dive into constructive alignment, guiding faculty on how to synchronize learning outcomes with the unique demands of international, virtual modules.
- Assessment and Evaluation: Dr Kathleen M Morales led a session on developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills within the COIL framework, focusing on how to effectively measure student success in a collaborative, virtual environment.
- Intercultural Competence: Dr Shiella C Balbutin centered her session on enabling a multi-cultural and transcultural mindset, teaching participants how to navigate intercultural communication and sensitivity in global partnerships.

The second day shifted toward practical execution and sustainability:
- Digital engagement: Dr Mia Phoebe B Ajo explored educational technology tools for learner engagement, demonstrating how digital technologies can maintain seamless student connectivity across diverse time zones.
- SPAK-COIL Platform: Ms Harriet B Fernandez facilitated a practical walkthrough of the SPARK COIL Platform, empowering faculty to navigate the digital ecosystem to identify and connect with international co-collaborators.
- Strategic Roadmapping: The training concluded with a workshop led by Dr Maria Leah Paola M Estacio, where participants transitioned from theory to practice by drafting concrete implementation plans for their respective courses.
The event culminated with the expression of the participants’ commitment to conduct COIL courses. These new "COIL Champions" are now tasked to contribute to the implementation of COIL classes, ensuring that XU students gain international exposure and collaborative skills without leaving the home campus.
Through this replication training, Xavier University continues to strengthen its role in the Erasmus+ network, proving that geographical boundaries are no longer a barrier to world-class, collaborative education.
