As multilingualism continues to shape Philippine classrooms, educators are increasingly challenged to create learning spaces that recognize both the diversity of learners and the realities of language use in education. For Anito R Librando, Jr of Xavier University, this challenge became an opportunity for deeper professional growth through the successful completion of the Teaching English in Multilingual Settings (TEEMS) Certificate Course offered by Ateneo de Manila University's Ateneo Center for English Language Teaching (ACELT).

Conducted from 25 February to 22 April 2026, the TEEMS course was designed to equip Filipino educators with strategies and perspectives for teaching English in linguistically diverse environments. Facilitated by Dr Marianne G Perfecto, the program explored the evolving role of English in multilingual communities and examined how teachers can effectively support English language development while acknowledging the importance of learners’ home languages.

For Mr Librando, whose work spans both Basic Ed and College classroom instruction, the course provided timely insights into the realities faced by multilingual Filipino learners. The TEEMS course also highlighted the importance of fair and responsive assessment practices in English language education. Through collaborative discussions and reflective activities, educators were encouraged to rethink traditional English-only approaches and adopt more learner-centered strategies.

Mr Librando’s completion of the program reflects Xavier University’s continuing commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and transformative education. As classrooms become increasingly multilingual, initiatives such as TEEMS help educators develop approaches that are inclusive, culturally responsive, and grounded in the realities of Filipino learners.

Through opportunities for professional formation and lifelong learning, Xavier University educators continue to strengthen their capacity to create meaningful educational experiences that empower students across diverse linguistic and cultural contexts.
